Application to the College of Education Studies and Human Sciences
The application process takes place the semester immediately before a student intends to take Block (i.e. ES 312/317/328 and MUED 318). Please be very aware of deadlines and procedures. Failure to follow procedures or meet deadlines may prevent the application from being considered in this highly competitive process. Detailed instructions will also be sent via email each semester as a reminder of the process and update any potential submission guidelines.
The Requirements for admission into the Teacher Education Program include:
A GPA of 2.75 is required at the time of application. This is a DPI requirement upon graduation and non-negotiable.
A 3.0 in the content area coursework (as listed on the Degree Audit).**
Successful completion of the University Writing Requirement (complete Writing 114, 116, 118, or 120 or the equivalent with a C or better).
Successful completion of the University Math Requirement (complete one college-level math course earning a C or better).
Completion of an introductory education course with a field placement (e.g. SPED 205, ES 203, ES 212 or the equivalent) with a grade of B- or better.
**The Music Content Area Praxis exam is required if a student has a GPA below 3.0 in the content area. See Dr. Dunbar if there is a concern with content area GPA.
Step 1: Apply to the College of Education and Human Sciences and the Music Education Division.
I. Application to College of Education and Human Sciences
There are two important parts of the application process of which should be observed:
An eform that is to be completed by the student applying to COEHS, which includes their information regarding Gate 1.
The eform is due to the College of Education and Human Sciences on or before March 1 or October 1 at noon typically.
II. Application to Music Education Division
A detailed cover letter will accompany the email with specific instruction regarding this application, which must be deposited in an assigned folder on the W drive. The items to be included are:
Resume (in the format provided that includes all practicum teaching experiences with cooperating teacher and music education appropriate experiences),
PDF of current Degree Audit from CampS,
Course Outline Sheet, AND
Philosophy Statement.
**If a student is interested in being considered for an internship during the student teaching semester, the Internship Application should also be completed and submitted with the above materials.
Deadline for submission of Music Education Division materials is March 1 or October 1 at 4 PM typically.
Step 2: Faculty score the application materials.
The Music Education faculty score the resumes and philosophy statements, with three faculty members scoring resumes (20 points) and the remaining faculty members scoring philosophy statements (30 points). The scores are averaged. The Music Education Coordinator also checks the Course Grade Grid, which is used to complete a grade check and results in another score (20 points). This score is added to the resume score and the philosophy score. Finally, faculty who have interacted with the student during the music education sequence rate each student dispositionally. The scores of each faculty member are averaged (30 points) and added to the other scores, resulting in a composite score out of 100 points.
Step 3: Admittance to the College of Educational Studies.
If the faculty agree that a student should be admitted to the College of Educational Studies and all application materials are submitted appropriately in the College of Educational Studies and Music Education, the student will be admitted. There is a mandatory meeting, information about which will be emailed to the student upon admittance.
Step 4: Attend meeting and/or respond to emails to register for Block.
